Dick B.’s son, Ken B., M.A., here.
The New “Dick B. on Recovery Mini Reference Set No. 5” (Twelve Steps for You): $49.95, plus S&H. The Mini Ref. Set includes the following five (5) titles on A.A. History by Dick B.:
[1.] Dick B., God and Alcoholism: Our Growing Opportunity in the 21st Century (Kihei, HI: Paradise Research Publications, 2002), 182 pp. (Regular retail list price: $21.95).
From the front cover of God and Alcoholism by Dick B.:
“Many thanks to Dick B., the leading historian of A.A., for this unique and valuable story.”
The Reverend Howard J. Clinebell, Ph.D.
Professor Emeritus, Claremont School of Theology,
Former Professor of Pastoral Psychology and Counseling,
Claremont Graduate University
Author of 13 books, including
Understanding and Counseling Persons with Alcohol, Drug, and Behavioral Addictions (revised, enlarged, and updated)
From the back cover of God and Alcoholism by Dick B.:
“Here the author details and thoroughly documents the simple seven-point recovery program of early A.A., as it was reported to John D. Rockefeller, Jr., by his agent Frank Amos (later an A.A. Trustee). That spiritual recovery program (developed in Akron between 1935 and 1938) produced an astonishing seventy-five percent success rate among ‘medically incurable’ alcoholics who ‘really tried.’ The successes caused the forty early A.A. pioneers to believe and declare that there was a cure for alcoholism—a cure that had been effected by relying on Almighty God, the Creator.
“Dick’s title then covers what the pioneers said about the power of God to heal and cure alcoholism. Also, what their Good Book (the Bible) and other observers of their day said that confirmed the efficacy of the their new method which combined the power of God, the knowledge of medicine, and the experience of drunks working with drunks. The author also gives credible testimony to the great role Alcoholics Anonymous has played in his own life and in the Twentieth Century. And it forthrightly criticizes what the author calls the ‘nonsense gods’ of recovery—idols and ideas about an elusive and ill-defined ‘power’ that has crept into the recovery picture at the hands of atheists, humanists, professionals, writers, and a few misinformed clergy.
“The book concludes with a call to restore and return the Creator Yahweh to the recovery scene in the 21st Century. It would bring back to the fore the abundant life and deliverance sought and received by early AAs through reliance on the one, true, living God of whom Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob both spoke.”
“This message by historian Dick B. about God and A.A. is long overdue.”
Ozzie and Bonnie Lepper, Wilson House at East Dorset, VT

[2.] Dick B., Pioneer Stories in Alcoholics Anonymous: God’s Role in Recovery Confirmed! (Kihei, HI: Paradise Research Publications, Inc., 2012), 106 pp. (Regular retail list price: $19.95).
From the back cover of Pioneer Stories in Alcoholics Anonymous by Dick B.:
“In 2011, Dick B. wrote a 23-page Introduction for Alcoholics Anonymous: The Original 1939 Edition, Dover Publications’ reprint on the first edition of the Big Book. In that Introduction, Dick provided key historical facts about the highly-successful, original Akron A.A. ‘Christian fellowship’ program. (John D. Rockefeller’s agent Frank Amos reported on this program in February 1938. See DR. BOB and the Good Oldtimers, page 131.) Dick also discussed the importance of the 29 testimonies in the ‘Personal Stories’ section of the first edition, only three of which were included in the fourth edition of the Big Book published in 2001.
“In this present title, Pioneer Stories in Alcoholics Anonymous, Dick B. and Ken B. quote extensively from those first edition personal stories, focusing particularly on the many times early A.A. pioneers spoke of the roles played by God, His Son Jesus Christ, and the Bible in their recovery from alcoholism. Appendices cover important Big Book topics such as: (1) the highly-suspicious statement ‘Why don’t you choose your own conception of God’ attributed to Bill W.’s ‘sponsor,’ Ebby T.; (2) key events in the writing of the Big Book; (3) the expression ‘religious experience’; (4) the phrase ‘spiritual experience’; and (5) the 20 personal stories in the prepublication ‘Multilith Edition’ of the Big Book. Christian recovery leaders and workers have much to learn from here!”
[3.] Dick B., Real Twelve Step Fellowship History: The Old School A.A. You May Not Know: Training the Trainers (Kihei, HI: Paradise Research Publications, Inc., 2006), 174 pp. (Regular retail list price: $23.95).
From the back cover of Real Twelve Step Fellowship History by Dick B.:
“Put your 12-Step Speakers, Sponsors, and Counselors to Work!
“You may regularly listen to excellent speakers, sponsors, and counselors in 12-Step programs. Changes are, however, that they probably rarely, if ever, talk to you about the origins, history, and practices of early pioneer recovery programs.
“Why?
“Because there are few histories to inform them; few teachers to instruct them; and too few people who really want to change. Speakers can get lots of applause if they stick to their drunkalogs, and make you laugh, cry, and maybe identify. Sponsors have few resources that connect the dots. Counselors feel safer telling you about your disease and taking the safe path—handing out a Big Book, a Twelve x Twelve, and a devotional and sending you to outside groups and meetings.
“What does this book say? It says that it is high time to take these talented and admired people to the schoolroom. Three decades ago, there was no place to look. And if one of these people talked about history, he or she usually talked about the party-line that left out God, left out the Bible, left out the sources of the Twelve Steps, and pointed to a program that simply said you didn’t really have to believe anything at all – just choose your own ‘higher power’ and go to meetings.
“We believe that many fine speakers, sponsors, and facilitators can and should get cracking. They should pick up the accurate history books now available, learn them, and talk about them. Why? Because they can then tell the afflicted exactly how and why the early pioneers were cured and had a 75% to 93% success rate. And those who teach you can also train you – to look for yourself, think for yourself, and place your reliance on the Creator rather than teachers.
“This new book tells you our history, how to approach it, how to teach it, and how to use it.”
[4.] Dick B. and Ken B., Stick with the Winners! How to Conduct More Effective 12-Step Recovery Meetings Using Conference-Approved Literature: A Dick B. Guide for Christian Leaders and Workers in the Recovery Arena (Kihei, HI: Paradise Research Publications, Inc., 2012), 98 pp. (Regular retail list price: $19.95).
From the back cover of Stick with the Winners! and Why by Dick B. and Ken B.:
“The book responds to the many 12-Step Fellowship members, Christian leaders and workers, and others wanting 12-Step Recovery Meetings who have asked: ‘How can I establish a 12-Step Recovery Meeting that will enable its members to learn about: (1) the Christian origins, history, and founding of the early Alcoholics Anonymous ‘Christian fellowship’ founded in Akron, Ohio, in June of 1935; (2) how and why the early A.A. meetings were likened to First Century Christianity at work; (3) the precise First Century Christian practices in early A.A. that enabled it to achieve the 75% overall success rate early A.A. claimed and the documented 93% success rate in Cleveland; (4) where in present-day ‘Conference-approved’ literature can you find language making ‘old-school’ A.A. appropriate today.
“This book addresses basic problems such as: (1) ‘You can’t talk about Jesus or the Bible in an A.A. meeting!’ (2) ‘The Bible and other resources on A.A.’s history are not ‘Conference-approved!’ (3) ‘What you are saying/doing is against the Traditions!’ You will have before you a road map to incorporating early A.A.’s reliance on the power and love of God in modern recovery meetings. And you will learn the specific techniques followed by the cofounders and early members of A.A.”
[5.] Dick B., Twelve Steps for You: Take the Twelve Steps, with the Big Book, A.A. History, and the Good Book at Your Side, 4th ed.(Kihei, HI: Paradise Research Publications, Inc., 2005), 94 pp. (Regular retail list price: $21.95.)
From the back cover of Twelve Steps for You by Dick B.:
“This is the much awaited work of A.A. History Dick B. on the origins of each of the Twelve Steps that were written by Bill Wilson and published in A.A.’s Big Book.
“This book is first and foremost a history of each step. It shows how each of A.A.’s co-founders contributed to each of the Steps, either by their writings or their principles and practices. It looks at the original Aron A.A. program which had no steps at all and took its basic ideas from the Bible and its principles and practices primarily from the United Christian Endeavor Movement of Dr. Bob’s youth. Then—source by source—it looks at each step as it was impacted upon by a particular contributor. Thus at the contributions of the Bible, then the Oxford Group, then Rev. Sam Shoemaker, then the teachings of Dr. Bob’s wife Anne Smith, then the so-called ‘six steps’ as Bill termed his version of the original word-of-mouth program, and then the other sources. In this respect, the book is an historical study of the roots of each Step; and it can be used for individual and group study of the Steps in a very meaningful way.
“It is also a guide. A guide to understanding, and a guide to taking each step. It shows you how to take the Steps exactly as directed in A.A.’s Big Book. It also suggests how you might look at each of the Steps in terms of all those who contributed to its language and mean. Finally, it provides Christians and students with a means of considering, learning, and ‘taking’ each of the Steps in light of its Biblical and historical roots with the Big Book, Bible, and history at hand.
“When you are through, you will have a perspective of the real spiritual utility of the Twelve Steps in a believer’s world, despite the secularization and universalism that are diluting all Twelve Step programs and the language used in connection with the Steps. For example, God ‘as we understood Him’ historically and Biblically means just that—Almighty God, the Creator, as He is understood by the newcomer at the time of taking Steps 3 and 11. So too, ‘powerless’ in Step 1 is presented in its historical context (‘I was licked’) rather than in some puzzling linguistic context seldom understood or unraveled. You’ll know and guide the taking of the Twelve Steps as they were intended to be understood and as you never did before.”
